"Cyberlearning Universe closing the gap on shortage of IT Professionals," IT Recruiter Magazine, June 1999

In an earlier life, as chairman and owner of the world-famous Nick Bolletieri Tennis Academy, he helped to develop world tennis champions including Andre Agassi and Monica Seles. He saved the Venezuelan social security and health care system from years of deficit operations. He taught Indian Prime Minister Rajev Gandhi management systems. He helped to reduce traffic deaths in Puerto Rico by 21 percent. He won the "Best Professor" award. He's the author of many innovative concepts including Management by Systems (MBS), Total Tennis, and CyberLearning. He also nurtured the "Wall Street Whiz Kid," Roger Kuttan. He is noted learning systems innovator Dr. Appu Kuttan - founder and president of the successful Cyberlearning Universe (CLU). CLU is project of the non-profit National Education Foundation founded in 1989 to provide effective and affordable training for adults and children in the information technology skills.

The Universe was founded after discussions with national leaders including President Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore and Intel Chairman Dr. Gordon Moore.

Students enrolled in CLU's full Microsoft Certified Systems Engineering (MCSE) program, receive 172 classroom hours of what Kuttan proudly calls the "Ivy League of IT Training."

"Our Instructors are the top-rated Microsoft Certified Trainers in the area," said CLU's Program Director Eldred Chavez. "We believe the only way to achieve our 100% graduation goal is to provide our students with the very best environment and instruction available."

Whats more, to increase the population of qualified technology workers, National Educational Foundation, with supporters that included the Journal Newspapers and Washingtonpost.com, is offering scholarships of $2,000 scholarship award. Students pay only $4,800 for full MCSE training at CLU.

Highest graduation rate
Using his theory of deriving success through systems, Kuttan's IT training program has one of the highest graduation rates -75 to 100%- among those offering the popular MCSE.
"That's much higher than the national average of 17% for MCSE," said CLU's admissions director, Kevin Boyle.

How does he do it?
Kuttan developed a system, of course, integrating resources that begin with a group of outstanding Teachers, state-of-the-art Technology, high-quality course Content, and Motivational rewards to help students learn faster and better. Kuttan calls this the Cyberlearning TTCM Way.

Since 1994, CyberLearning has trained more than 6,000 students in the Washington, DC metro area and 15 other cities.

Paid internships and job placement
One of the greatest challenges for many students just entering or making a career change into the IT profession is experience.

CLU has established the Northern Virginia Internship Council, an internship program designed to help CLU graduates gain that valuable experience. In partnership with leaders in the IT business such as BTG, CACI, Computer Science, IDA, Lockheed Martin and others, CLU helps its graduates move into paid internship programs and jobs with these organizations.

An aggressive goal
Kuttan has a goal of his own. In fact, it's an aggressive goal he hopes will address the shortage of IT professionals. Over the next 10 years, he intends to train 100,000 professionals in MCSE and other IT skills.

What may be even more impressive is his goal to close the widening gap among America's youth with computer skills and those without them. In the next 10 years, Kuttan plans to train one million disadvantaged children in basic IT skills. He's got the support of some of the country's leaders in education. Recently the White House has invited Kuttan to present his program to the nation's empowerment zone leaders.

All-star advisory group
CyberLearning Universe has an impressive group serving as it's advisors. They include:

  • Dr. Richard Ernst - Legendary president emeritus of the Northern Virginia Community College
  • Dr. Laurence Peters - White House Director of the Empowerment Zone Task Force
